The Orange Elks support our Veterans and our active service men and women with various programs. In the past we have served lunches to our blind veterans from Long Beach Hospital and gone on a boat ride through Newport Bay, supported the Broadway and Manor Houses in Santa Ana, given scholarships to our local veterans from Orange, supported Patriots and Paws and helped at Stand Downs. This week, we all agreed that of the many things we have done with the Elks over the years, this week was very rewarding!
Working along with Elk members from Newport Harbor, Garden Grove, Santa Ana and La Habra, ten Orange Elks played bingo with thirty-five veterans at the Long Beach Veterans Hospital. We provided chips, cookies and drinks. Each veteran was given a tee shirt and a gift bag with toiletry items, socks and candy. The veterans played bingo for over $300 in prize money. A family member approached us after bingo was finished and said thanks very much for coming out and doing this because it get the vets out of bed to play bingo and most of them don't even get out of bed for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Next, twelve Orange Elks along with the Newport Legion and the VFW from Buena Park went to the Army Reserve Center and helped feed over one hundred and eighty soldiers and their family members to hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, potato salad, spaghetti, cookies and other goodies. There was a jump house and cotton candy for the kids. The soldiers were from145th Multi Functional Medical Battalion who were deploring over seas. There were also soldiers training from the British Army.

The week ended going to Camp Pendleton to serve lunch for the Summer Barbeque Beach Bash for the members of the 7th Engineer Support Battalion and their families. Close to one thousand attended which included Navy and Marines. Peter Lent of the Firehouse BBQ assembled his crew that came from Santa Ana, Simi Valley and Temecula to prepare eighty pounds of chicken, five hundred and twenty pounds of pork for pulled pork sandwiches, forty gallons of baked beans, fifteen trays of cole slaw, and fifty watermelons. Drinks and chips were included.
These were three events that our members did for some very special people and are looking forward to the next one.
