In December, the members of the Orange Elks look forward to two of our favorite programs for children that are in need. The Eli Home Christmas Tree and “Shop with a Cop”.
The Eli Home is a shelter for Abused Children and their moms. We collect gifts at the lodge and deliver them to the Eli Home office. Shop with a COP gives us a chance to partner with the Orange Police Department’s “Shop with a Cop” program.
Because of the Covid-19 virus and its restrictions, face masks and social distancing we need to come up with a different way to hold these two events. This year the lodge has been successful by “Improvising, Adapting and Overcoming” the pandemic restrictions.
The Eli Home Christmas Toy Drive was different this year. We were unable to place a Christmas Tree in the lodge and have our members bring in unwrapped gifts. The Eli Home children were still in need of Christmas presents. We received a list of the boys, girls, and their ages. Our lodge Trustees approved $1,000 to purchase gifts and the lodge members raised another $1,000 to help fund the project. We purchased the gifts in Orange to help support our local merchants including the Tiddlywinks Toy store. Lego’s, Book’s, Arts & Crafts, Board Games, Sports Items were some of the toys requested.
McPherson Magnet School of Orange conducts a Toy Drive each Christmas to donate toys to a local charity and this year they selected the Elks and the Eli Home Christmas Present program. The school collected about 150 toys.
This year the moms were included, and a gift box was given to 30 moms that included lip gloss, lotion, and fuzzy socks.

"Shop with a Cop" is a program that rewards children (ages 5 to 18) with the opportunity to purchase clothing and other necessities while shopping with a police officer.

The Orange Elks donated $2,000 to this year’s program. The children selected were from Youth Centers of Orange. Some of the criteria used to select these children included trying harder in school, listening to their parents and teachers and being a good person. Augie presented each child a “Shop with a Cop” t-shirt, a goodie bag (provided by the O C Emerald Society). Inside was a teddy bear, an Orange Police Department color book and a $100 gift card for Walmart.
The Orange Police Department partnered with the Orange Elks. The Village at Orange, Buffalo Wild Wings, Kays Jewelers, Walmart, OC Law Enforcement Emerald Society, the Orange County Police Officers Association and generous donations from Orange Citizens to make this happen.
