If it is the Veterans Day week the Orange Elks will be supporting and honoring our Veterans. The week started with our members helping set up the Field of Valor event in Orange at Handy School. This is the fifth year of the patriotic tribute to our men and women who are serving and or have served in the military. The Orange Elks donated $2,500 to be a Silver Star Sponsor and we honored fifty veterans with a flag that included their name, their branch of service and their rank. There were 1,776 flags on display.

Each flag had a ribbon that had a meaning. The ribbon indicated that they returned home alive, were a Medal of Honor winner, killed in action or did not return home, a POW or on active duty or currently deployed.
Our lodge supports and has donated to Dogs on Deployment www.dogsondeployment.org. One of our members is taking care of Otto while his owner is deployed. Here is Otto and his flag.

Our Veterans are people who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check payable to the United States of America for an amount up to and including their life. The Santa Ana American Legend donated Poppies to all who attended. The theme of the program was “Thank You”!!! Several videos were presented with that theme and the words “Thank You”! We saluted our members and had them stand when their branches song was played and yelled “Thank You”. Our member, Harvey Johnson a Korean War Army veteran was recognized because of his service and given a standing ovation. L – R Harvey is pictured with PER Colin Smith

Each year our program ends with the singing of “God Bless the USA” by Lee Greenwood. “As long as there is a Vet, the Orange Elks will never forget”.
