Each year the Orange Lodge has a Veterans Day program to honor our Veterans and this year we thanked fifty-seven of our members who have served.

Our members from the five branches, were asked to the lodge floor and there we sang their military song. We thanked our Veterans who served in the many conflicts. Standing ovations were given to two of our World War II members, Armed Cruz and Russell Higgins with our program chairman Don Westerfield.

Our Veterans Committee presented a scholarship of $1,475 to Army Sgt. Joseph Calise who is going to use it to further his studies. His major is Psychology and wants to help the returning soldiers and veterans with PTSD.

“Stoney” Bourke, DDGER, gave The History of the Elks and Veterans. An interesting fact, in 1918 the Elks built a 700-bed hospital in Boston and donated it to the federal government, creating the precursor to today’s VA Medical Centers.

Veterans Chairman Don Westerfield in closing reminded the audience that the promise to our Veterans is not an idle pledge. "So long as there are Veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them!”
