The Orange Elks Lodge # 1475 held its eleventh Youth Appreciation Night. The Orange Elks recognize the outstanding accomplishments of the youths from our city. Master Of Ceremonies, Stephanie Fitzpatrick, Loyal Knight, presided over the evening’s event. She pointed out that “Our Youth are the future of our Country”!

The lodge has donated to the Orange Police Department to purchase police dogs. Two surprise guests were Officer Carlos Gutierrez and his dog Lycan. Lycan finished forth in patrol building search at the seventeenth Annual Riverside County Sheriff’s K 9 Trials.

We were treated to a very special Guest Speaker Zack Collie. He enjoyed hanging with his friends, playing on-line video games, dirt-biking in the desert, camping at the Colorado River, watching movies, texting his friends, going to the beach, taking boxing lessons and was on the Yorba Linda H S wrestling team. However at age 15 on May 31, 2010, Memorial Day, all that changed. Zack sustained a life-changing injury. While bodysurfing at Newport Beach, he broke his neck at the 4th vertebrae and damaged his spinal cord. He was immediately paralyzed, fully conscious, and floating face down in the surf. Fortunately for Zack, his friend was close, turned him over and got him to the beach saving his life. Three years later, he will graduate from Yorba Linda H S, has been accepted at Cal State Fullerton and has a new best friend Sedona, a canine companion service dog who was with Zack. This was Zack’s first time he has spoken to a group about his ordeal. His message was “Never Give Up”!

Jane Emerson, better known as Coach Emy Coach Emy is a teacher at Serrano Elementary School and is retiring this year was thanked for her years of help to our Lodge and the Hoop Shoot Program.

Drug Awareness Chairman Chris Cooper handed out a $100 check to our winner Abiageal O’Connor who read her essays on “The Choice 4 Me is Drug Free”, she was also awarded a Certificate from the Orange Coast District and another $100 check.

Americanism Essay chairman Craig Coleman presented the winners of $100, $50 and $25 check from the lodge and each of them read their essay on the subject on “What Does the National Anthem Mean to Me”. Fifth and sixth grade winners were Grant MacDowall $100 and Cade Chavis $25. Seventh and eights grade winners were Vincent Nguyen $100, Lillian Nguyen $50 bond and Karuna Hin $25 bond.

Lynda Einstein, Scholarship Chairman, handed out money for scholarships to the Most Valuable Student Contest Winners. To say these ten individuals were outstanding would not be saying enough. Part of the judging was in the areas that included Community Service. These 10 students have done over 5,000 hours of community service during their 4 years in high school. In Leadership and Extra Curricular Activities, these 10 students have done over 8,500 hours during their 4 years in high school and all of this while attending their high school classes and maintaining above a 4.0 grade point average. The Orange Elks Lodge donated $500 to:
Kayla Liu who will attend UC San Diego and study Human Biology; Sarah Mountain who will attend Cal State Fullerton and Double Major in English and Spanish with hopes of being a Translator or work in Publishing; Deepa Shah will attend UC Riverside or Chapman and study International Business; Natalee Sims will attend Azusa Pacific and study Nursing; and Natalee’s sister Noelle Sims will also attend Azusa Pacific and study Occupational Therapy.
The following Orange Lodge winners received a total of $1,200 from the Lodge and from the State: Denzil Mathew who will attend UC Berkeley and study Economics, Cheyenne Payne who will attend UC San Diego and study Marine Science, and Ramzi Benyelles who will attend UCLA and major in Global Studies.
Jean-Luc Marsh will attend NYU and study International Relations/Journalism will receive a total of $4,200 from ENF/National and Orange Lodge.
Jinhan (Grace) Li will receive a total of $7,500 from ENF/National, the State, the Orange Coast District and the Lodge.

McPherson Magnet School Presentation
Chris and Tracey Cooper Drug Awareness Chairmen went to McPherson Magnet School to present awards to two recipients that were unable to attend our Youth Appreciation Night.
They presented a Lodge Certificate to Cameron Chu for her Third Place finish in the Americanism Essay Contest; and a Lodge Certificate to Jason Troup for his Boys First Place finish in the Drug Awareness Essay. While there, the school presented awards to all of the recipients from McPherson that we honored in our contest.
