During every Elk year, we have many projects that our members look forward to. It may be Christmas Baskets, the Dictionary Project, the Eli Home Shelter for Abused Children’s Thanksgiving Dinner, the Down Syndrome Association of Orange County’s Picnic, the Police and Fire Dinner or the Orange Police Departments Police Dog Program but our members would agree that the police dog program is one of our favorites. The project started in 2006 and has raised over $56,000 to help the Orange Police Department purchase police dogs (seven so far) and helped the officers pay veterinary bills when the dog retires. Our Police Dog Chairmen are Amy Carr and Mike Duff. Amy organized a Mexican Dinner that supports both of these areas. This year Amy had an amazing group of volunteers that served over one hundred and sixty dinners and raise over three thousand dollars for the police dogs. The three active dogs (all German Shepherds) were present. K-9 officer Shryock and Nash demonstrated how a dog can protect their handler and apprehend a bad guy. All agreed it was a very successful evening.
